Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to join?

Nothing.

How do you make your money, then?

Through the climbing classes we hold each semester. We also print T-shirts, which the members can buy.

Do I have to buy a lot of gear?

No. The club has a few tents, ropes, biners, crampons, axes, and a few other miscelaneous items.

Could you be more specific?

  • 6 harnesses
  • 4 helmets
  • 2 ropes (1 50m decent, 1 40m not as decent.)
  • 2 figure 8s
  • 2 sticht plates
  • 2 tubers
  • various biners/slings
  • 2 pair rock shoes (pretty beat)
  • 2 tents (1 3-person Walrus, 1 4-person ?????)
  • 6 ice axes (1 50cm, 3 60cm, 2 80cm)
  • 7 pairs of crampons (with straps)
  • 1 60cm snow anchor
  • 1 mess of wands
  • 1 large bag of pitons (donated by Army Reserves)

What if I need a size 81.2 do-hickey? I don't see those on the list.

Many of the club members have their own tents, stoves, and ropes; stuff that is normally shared on trips. You can also rent gear at the W.S.U. Outdoor Recreation Center, or U. of I.'s Outdoor Program, located in their S.U.B.

What is the history of the Alpine Club?

About 15,000 years ago, primitive groups of human began to form primitive clubs. Today, we call them tribes. As human intelligence increased, so did the complexity of these tribes, and cities were formed.  The more advanced humans, however, have developed beyond the need for technology. It was in the mid 60's, that a group of the most advanced human beings on the planet decided to get together and form the W.S.U. Alpine Club.

O.K., but do I have to grow a beard?

Only the men do.

I don't know how to climb. Can I still join?

Sure, we do a lot more than just climbing. If you would like to go on some of our climbing trips, though, we reccommend taking the class.

What is the deal with the climbing wall?

It is maintained by the ASWSU Outdoor Recreational center. Before you can use the wall, you need to show that you know how to tie knots and belay. You can do this Wednesday nights: 5:00 - 6:00, or Saturdays: 12:00 - 1:00

This is Pullman What the hell is there to do around here?

Lots. Come to a meeting and find out.

What about liability?

The university is not liable for injury on our trips.  However, students in the climbing class are insured.

What do you do at the meetings?

We usually just b-s for a while. Talk about the upcoming weather, and what people want to do for the weekend. Sometimes, we make plans for stuff a couple weeks in advance, or decide to sponsor something. We usually end with a slide show.

What about those Pagan Bonfires I've heard about?

For those, you had to be a member for at least three years. The cub management stopped letting us burn things inside and the drums have been lost, so the practice has pretty much stopped.

O.K., where do you meet?

Wednesday nights at 7:00 in the Cub. Room b-3. Sometimes it changes, however. We will do our best to post any changes outside the door, or in the schedule.
